Notes
From Jim Blankenship, AAPG Geosciences Director
It is an exciting time to be in
the oil business, both internationally and
domestically. As spring comes to life there is an
energy in the air. Admitting an open bias, part of
my energy comes from looking forward to AAPG’s
annual meeting, held this year in San Antonio from
April 20-23. For those who are keeping your options
open, there is still time to make a decision and
participate. For the Gulf Coast audience there is
the Offshore Technology Conference to look forward
to from May 5-8. And before you know it Summer NAPE
will be upon us in August. Have a hot Midcontinent
prospect? Then seriously consider participating in
the 1st ever Midcontinent Prospect Expo organized by
the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association. So
you see where part of my energy comes from.
This energy is bolstered by what I see happening in
PTTC. Our regions have organized some workshops that
were really on target, and consequently very well
attended. Kudos to our Regional Directors and
regional volunteers for having a good sense of what
individuals in industry want to learn about and
finding speakers to deliver it. Glance at the
calendar (page 15) and you will see more solid
events coming up in the next few months. Take a
break from your feverish work schedule, plan some
professional development and participate. |

Just Who Is
It That PTTC Serves?
By
Lance Cole, Operations Manager |

Someone recently
asked the above question, and a few more. We were pretty
certain of the answers, but we did a little digging to
confirm our thoughts. The question about who PTTC serves
has multiple aspects—What sector of the industry do they
represent? Where are they located? What disciplines do
they represent? Questions about industry sector and
geographic location are best answered by looking at our
newsletter demographics. Those from the E&P sector
(industry) are the primary readers—74%. Of those, 73%
are independents with the vast majority being mid-sized
to small independents. Geographically, it is no surprise
that Texas leads the pack but there are sizeable
audiences in other leading producing states.

organizations and
how representative our regional volunteer groups are. We
checked those perceptions a couple different
ways—judging from the workshop title alone whether a
workshops was an "engineering" or "geoscience" workshop and tallying them
up. Going a step
further, we factored in attendance and applied that
infamous 80/20 rule. Getting beyond the "how" to the
bottom-line answer—just over 50% are engineers, a pretty
even balance with geologists. There are a few
geophysicists and others, but overall they represent
much less than 10% of the audience. What do they get
when they participate? PTTC provides enough
technology information/insight for them to judge whether
a technology fits their |

The
question about discipline is harder to answer since, per
se, PTTC doesn't ask those attending our workshops what
discipline they represent. Perception wise, considering
the program as a whole, we feel the vast majority are
either engineers or geologists with engineers and
geologists being relatively evenly balanced. We know
that the discipline mix does vary by geographic area,
needs and opportunities at a given time, inclination of

opportunity or
problem. Presented properly, this moves people to
action. Once moved to action, they will likely need
to do some additional homework to actually go out
and apply a technology, but they will have been able
to make an informed "Yes/No" decision with a degree
of confidence. Our program covers the entire
spectrum of E&P (exploration, reservoir and
development, drilling and completion, operations and
production), so there is something for nearly
everyone to grab a hold of and apply. |
