Drilling in Today's Environment

Historical drilling statistics illustrate the pain of the 1980s well. Well Servicing's article notes that the percentage of successful wells drilled has climbed steadily, past 80% in 1989 and exceeding 90% in 2001. Does this say something about risk-averse drilling or more drilling in unconventional resources where true dry holes are rare? PDC bits account for an increasing percentage of total footage. Note the dramatic improvement in footage per diamond bit since 1990. Much of Hart's E&P's February issue (www.eandpnet.com) deals with drilling-related technologies. Another article ("Drilling Advances Apply To Conventional Wells," The American Oil & Gas Reporter, January 2006, pp. 117-122) makes the point—don't just focus on the high challenge wells, work on the technology for everyday drilling.
