Halliburton's OptoLogTM DTS and iFlowTM Profiling Software

Measurements from Halliburton's OptoLog Distributed Temperature Sensor (DTS) can be used in their iFlow analysis software to identify fluid entry points and qualify inflow from individual zones. Real-time data can be used in producers, injectors and observation wells to optimize reservoir performance. The optical fiber is 50 microns in diameter with concentric cladding that is 125 microns in diameter. It is protected by placing the optical fiber inside of capillary tubing. Temperature rating is 570 °F. Halliburton offers several fiber optic and analysis software solutions.

Proposals Advance in BLM's Oil Shale Program

Twenty proposals were submitted in response to the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) call for nominations for 160-acre RD&D oil shale leases. BLM recently announced that eight of these 20 proposals are eligible for further consideration. The successful companies are Chevron Shale Oil Company, EGL Resources, Inc., ExxonMobil Corp., Oil-Tech, Inc., Oil Shale Exploration, LLC and Shell Frontier Oil and Gas (3 proposals). Six of the projects are in Colorado, with the remaining two in Utah. Six of the proposals involve in-situ retorting, which does not permanently modify the land surface.

In announcing the awards, BLM Director Kathleen Clarke noted: "Each of these proposals shows potential for advancing knowledge of shale recovery technology, evidence of economic viability and adequate means for managing the environmental impact." The next step will be to complete an evaluation of the eight proposals under the National Environmental Policy Act.

IntelliServ® Network Commercial Service Launched

Grant Prideco recently announced commercial launch of it's Intelliserve network, industry's first high-speed, real-time drill string telemetry system. The network was field proven in U.S. and Canadian trials. Since 2004, a 14,000-foot drill string deployed for BP in Oklahoma and a 10,000-ft drill string deployed for Anadarko Canada have drilled 18 wells, accumulating more than 6,000 operating hours while drilling 180,000 feet. Operations in Canada are expected to continue as part of an ongoing demonstration and testing program.
