Notes
From Jim Blankenship, AAPG Geosciences Director
Notes From Jim Blankenship, AAPG
Geosciences Director This summer as PTTC and AAPG
worked to make the transition happen I began to
develop an appreciation for the complexity and
uniqueness of PTTC. Having primary responsibility
now for some two months, I'm now getting "the pulse
of PTTC" and am excited about what is happening.
I truly realize how
-
It is connected, in myriad
ways to myriad organizations and individuals,
-
It is unique in the tech
transfer culture it has created, and
-
Admirably the
universities/geological surveys that serve in
the regions have stepped forward to implement an
admittedly difficult non-subsidized business
model.
Within the national organization we
are committed to applying the same energy and
insight. I ask your patience as we get our hands
fully around operations. Existing funds are now
flowing through the system and plans to raise
additional funds are being implemented. Your part is
to watch for workshops that you could benefit from,
then participate by attending. Individuals are also
encouraged to consider how their companies might
participate as sponsors. Together we'll make this
happen, technologies will be applied and production
and reserves increased. |

It's PTTC
Full Steam Ahead |
|
It happened,
following months of work by PTTC and AAPG. Effective
Oct. 9, PTTC transitioned to an AAPG-managed
organization. This provides PTTC the organizational
stability that it was unable to develop on its own when
federal funding dramatically decreased. Stability
ensures that PTTC will continue its work of transferring
E&P-related technology information and insights to the
domestic E&P industry, primarily targeting independents.
Since 1994 PTTC has proven adept at doing that, creating
a network and culture that:
- Transcends
geography—serving people where they live and
work, moving technologies that work to other regions
with high potential for application
|
- Transcends
knowledge—conveying knowledge (facts) in a
manner that leads to application (wisdom). PTTC puts
research and technology advances in the hands of the
doers.
- Transcends
tools—building on the workshop foundation
with a strong web and communications presence.
- Respects
and stimulates interactive learning—expert to
learner, learner to expert, learner to learner,
customer to developer, etc. One valued result is
that operational reality comes back to the academic
and technology developer communities.
As outgoing
PTTC Chairman Gene Ames noted in the press release
announcing the transition: |
 |
- Transcends
organizations—linking SPE, AAPG, SIPES, IPAA,
state/regional trade associations, Interstate Oil
and Gas Compact Commission, federal funding sources,
academia, state agencies, trade journals, producers,
the service sector, research groups, etc.
- Transcends
disciplines—serving reservoir engineers,
operations engineers, completions engineers,
explorationists, exploitation specialists,
acquisitions specialists, geologists, geophysicists,
technicians, land men, technology innovators,
commercialization specialists, and business owners.
|
"Strengths
of PTTC will be the same—most universities will stay
engaged, regional volunteer groups will be autonomous
and work closely with the universities, cross-discipline
diversity will be encouraged . . . DOE remains a strong
supporter . . ." PTTC's regions, reduced to six to align
with AAPG's sections, have planned and are implementing
next year's workshops. Led by AAPG, a new Board (see
next page) has formed and is working to guide the new
PTTC. The institutional memory, diversity and individual
capabilities and commitment of the new Board members
bodes well for PTTC's future. |
