World Oil Annual Expandable Roundup

Eight new products or new applications for existing products were featured in this year's World Oil Expandable Roundup. In summary, they are:

  • Baker Oil Tools High-integrity pressure seal is a proprietary metal-to-metal sealing device utilizing expanding tubulars. It uses no elastomers and is therefore insensitive to high temperatures and pressures. It will expand the range of many well intervention tools and, because it does not rely on the memory of the metal, it can be fully retracted in applications that require tool retrieval.

  • Baker Oil Tools FORM-lock TORXS is the industry's first expandable liner hangar packer system that can be run as a conventional liner system. This system overcomes the problem with today's expandable liner hangars and packers that can be run in and expanded, but then the running tools cannot be released until the well is cemented.

  • Baker Oil Tools EXdrill system is an open-hole, stand-alone, non-cemented drilling liner. It is used to temporarily isolate a lost circulation or instability zone so that drilling can continue without a problem. Once placed and expanded, it isolates the problem zone without reducing the drilling ID and allows for multiple systems to be set.

  • TIW HPHT liner hanger and packer system is effective as a liner hanger or casing repair. The system is designed for high liner pressure and temperatures as well as increased hanger load. The pressure integrity of the system is equal to the lesser of the liner run or the casing in which it is set. Ten liners have been deployed to date with lengths ranging from 2,500 to 6,200 feet.

  • Eventure Expandable pipe for H2S is dispelling the belief that expandable liners cannot be used in wells with high levels of H2S. Due to equipment unavailability, Marathon ran this expandable into a well offshore Africa. It performed as well as normal casing for the two years it remained in the well.

  • Read Well Services Electro-hydraulic wireline module, which was formerly deployed and expanded on drill pipe or coiled tubing, is now deployable by monocable wireline. The wireline deployment substantially reduces costs and allows subsea rigless intervention for the company's expandable products.

  • Read Well Services Expandable liner hanger is designed for slim-well construction and is currently under field test. The new liner hanger has no moving parts and does not require rotation to set. Multiple hangars can be run on the same string.

  • Weatherford 120 µm weave has been added to their 150, 230 and 270 µm weave products. It has undergone extensive testing and has application where 150 is too coarse. Weatherford has supplied over 250,000 feet of expandable sand screens in 400 applications world-wide.
