Spotlight on the Rocky Mountains

Dr. Sandra Mark is a petroleum geologist specializing in reservoir characterization of clastic rocks, and in computer applications for petroleum geoscientists. She is a Registered Professional Geologist (Wyoming) and a Certified Petroleum Geologist (AAPG). Her 22 years of experience include positions with Chevron and ARCO, and management of drilling partnerships through her own company.

Sandra Mark has been involved with PTTC's Rocky Mountain Region since its beginning at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), first as Coordinator then as Director. With the guidance of a very active Producer Advisory Group, currently led by Brook Phifer of NiCo Resources Inc., the regional program maintains a multi-faceted program that delivers more than 20 workshops per year, with half being software training. Software training courses are led by industry instructors and feature programs developed by, among others, Seismic MicroTechnology, GeoPlus, GeoGraphix, and Digital Formation. It's rare that there aren't a couple classes per month in the state-of-the-art computer lab, which is a partnership of the CSM, American Association of Petroleum Geologists and PTTC.

Other key elements of the regional program include:

  • Regional high interest workshops, such as coalbed methane (see  chart) and tight gas, often presented in collaboration with other regional operator associations and professional societies.
  • Environmental topics, such as land farming and air quality permitting.
  • Internet resources (http://www.mines.edu/research/PTTC/), which include a comprehensive links section and providing case histories online. A new, valuable resource has just been introduced to the Rockies website: the PTTC Data Exchange. This unique, pioneering initiative creates an on-line clearinghouse for oil and gas data. This service is free of charge, and serves as a platform to bring together people interested in rescuing data "languishing in basements".

Take an opportunity to thank Sandra and her crew for a job well done in serving the upstream O&G industry in the vast Rocky Mountain Region.
