Selected Highlights From Regional Newsletters(Visit regional websites to see full articles posted online) Appalachian Region, Spring 2002. SMT Kingdom Suite Donated to West Virginia. Houston-based Seismic MicroTechnology (SMT) has donated their Kingdom Suite seismic software package to Dr. Tom Wilson and the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University. The software, valued at more than $700,000, will be used in the department's computer lab, where up to 26 computers can access it at one time. Dr. Wilson stated that his involvement with PTTC was helpful in securing this donation. During the early years of the PTTC program, Dr. Wilson organized an annual seismic workshop with PTTC. Through their participation, SMT ended up asking Wilson to develop a primer to help industry learn how to use the software. SMT was so impressed with the primer that they have not only referred to it themselves, but have asked that it be updated. In return, this prompted the recent donation. Eastern Gulf Region, March 2002. Cretaceous Exploration Targets in Northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Hydrocarbon production from Cretaceous reservoirs in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico can be categorized as to the phase of Transgressive-Regressive (T-R) facies cycles. Sandstone reservoirs associated with the early transgressive, aggrading phase have accounted for 42% of the 7.437 tcf of natural gas produced from Cretaceous reservoirs there. Sandstone reservoirs associated with the late transgressive, backstepping and regressive, infilling phases have accounted for 63% of the 2 billion barrels of oil produced from Cretaceous reservoirs there. These findings indicate that the primary natural gas exploration target should be Cretaceous sandstone reservoirs of the transgressive, aggrading phase of T-R facies cycles associated with structural traps related to salt movement, and the principal oil exploration target should be Cretaceous sandstone reservoirs of the transgressive, backstepping and regressive, infilling phases of T-R facies cycles associated with structural traps related to salt movement. Texas Region, Monthly Column in Midland Reporter Telegram. PTTC Texas's Permian Basin Mentor Bob Kiker now provides a monthly column in the oil section of the Midland Reporter Telegram. This is one of the most widely read sections in the United States. The June 23 column (www.mywesttexas.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=4514791&BRD=2288&PAG=461&dept_id=474107&rfi=6) focused on case studies for the Petroleum Technology Digest. |
