SIPES Annual Meeting To Focus on Giant Fields and the Independent

The Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists (SIPES) is planning the 37th annual meeting for July 19-21 in Denver. This year’s focus will be “Giant Fields and the Independent in the New Millennium.”

Sessions are planned to cover: (1) Unconventional Gas Resources, (2) Significant Emerging Plays in North America: Opportunities for the Independent, and (3) International E&P for Independents. Preceding the regular meeting sessions, a July 19th seminar, co-sponsored by the SIPES Denver Chapter and the SIPES Foundation, will cover “Exploring Channels & Valley Fill Systems.”

For more information, or to register, contact SIPES phone 214-363-1780 or website www.sipes.org

Greater Green River Basin Study Released

Schlumberger recently released a study of the Greater Green River Basin (GGRB), which will allow operators to focus on areas with the most potential for success. The data from the study, which was performed by Holditch-Reservoir Technologies, is expected to be useful as a tool to objectively evaluate properties for acquisition or divestiture in the area. It should also help operators identify under-performing wells for restimulation.

Each study contains a list of potential restimulation prospects and infill locations, a prediction chart for every restimulation candidate, the cumulative versus best year correlations, maps showing well locations, results of the validation study, and an Access database containing the study’s results.

For more information, contact Holditch-Reservoir Technologies, phone 303-985-9900, fax 303-985-4111, email ggrb-consult@slb.com.

Louisiana Offshore Data Available Online

Oil and natural gas producers operating in Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico now have access to an on-line Petroleum Data Information Management System (PDIMS). It was launched recently by C&C Technologies, Inc., a Lafayette, Louisiana-based company. The system is expected to expand to other states along the Gulf of Mexico.

PDIMS is a comprehensive geographic information system that houses public data. It encompasses well, pipeline, lease, historical, and other information. PDIMS provides one of the most powerful well reporting software packages that enables customers to track, manage and optimize land development strategies.

For more information, or a free demo of PDIMS, contact Gene Prather, C&C Technologies, at 337-261-0660, or visit: www.pdims.com.

New Online Learning Opportunities for Petroleum Professionals

The importance of online and distance learning is increasing rapidly in the oil and gas industry. Here are three organizations offering online courses of interest to independent producers, and there are likely others.

  • The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) now offers three distance learning courses for members and non-members: (1) Monte Carlo Simulation for the Oil and Gas Industry (by James Murtha, consultant), (2) Hydraulic-Fracturing-Pressure Analysis (by Michael Smith, NSI Technologies), and (3) Reservoir Characterization: From the Laboratory to the Field (by Larry Lake, University of Texas, Austin).
  • Texas A&M University has begun using a multimedia approach, incorporating the web, CD-ROMs, and videos into its master’s program in petroleum engineering. The online catalog currently lists nine distance learning courses encompassing fundamentals of drilling engineering, economic evaluation/reservoir management, formation evaluation, reservoir engineering, and production engineering.
  • Colorado School of Mines (CSM) has seven courses online that may be taken independently, as part of a Non-Credit Certificate Program, or for a Graduate Credit Professional Certificate. Roger Slatt, former director of PTTC’s Rocky Mountain Region, is involved with both the “Clastic Reservoir Characterization” and the “Geologic Reservoir Characterization” courses. Current PTTC regional director Sandra Mark presents “Computer Applications for the Petroleum Geologist.”

Free Log Calculating Software Available

A free log calculator is available from Petroleum Software Technologies, a company that specializes in user-friendly petrophysical software. PSTware Log Calculator will quickly calculate porosity, water saturations, and other petrophysical properties with the user’s own log data. This program is useful for trial and error determinator of sensitivity to different parameters. The calculator also includes a basic version of SP-Mod, which is a program that corrects the SP log for environmental effects of resistivity and thin beds. Although this software is complimentary, users must register to download the installation.
