Government Releases DNV's Findings on Deepwater Horizon BOP (OGJ, 3/23/11)
DNV's report concluded that off-centered drill pipe prevented the blind
shear rams from fully closing and sealing the wellbore. The report concluded
that forces from flow of the well induced the drill pipe to buckle between
the upper annular and the upper variable bore rams. The drill pipe deflected
until it contacted the wellbore just above the blind shear ram. "The portion
of the drill pipe located between the shearing blade surfaces of the blind
shear rams was off center and held in this position by buckling forces."

NETL's Director Anthony Cugini Recognized by AIChE for Management
Excellence
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) will recognize
Anthony Cugini, Director of DOE's National Energy Technology
Laboratory (NETL), with its 2011 Management Division Award. This
award is sponsored by Dow Chemical. It recognizes NETL management
for "its substantial contribution to the management of engineers
involved in the chemical process industries, and to management
techniques and procedures utilized in those industries." In
particular, NETL management was cited for greatly expanding "the
scope and extent of worldwide collaboration between NETL, industry
and universities" and for championing the advancement of
computational modeling in chemical engineering applications. |
