Technology—The Engine That Drives O&G Production

Industry Highlight: 2005 Offshore Energy Achievement Awards

  • Emerging Innovation/Technology: Dynamic annular pressure control by @balance Americas, LLC. Commercializes dynamic annular pressure control technology developed by Shell in the late 1990s, providing an alternative to conventional wellbore pressure control methods.
  • Well Construction: WARP Fluids Technology by M-I SWACO. Enables drilling fluids to be engineered to achieve optimal well hydraulics and manage equivalent circulating densities for complex well geometries without barite sag and settlement.
  • Geoscience: Improvements in Deepwater Subsalt Imaging through Advances in Data Acquisition by Schlumberger and WesternGeco. New acquisition strategies exploiting Q-Marine technology were devised that ensured low frequencies would be generated and recorded.

DOE Highlight: DOE CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery Pre-Proposal Workshop
DOE's National Energy Technology Laboratory will soon issue a solicitation for CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR field demonstration projects). Priority consideration will be given to proposals that are most likely to maximize oil production in a cost-effective manner through the injection of CO2, while at the same time sequestering significant quantities of CO2. In addition to addressing technical aspects of the solicitation, additional meeting goals are to:

  • Provide an overview from industry and research organizations on current state-of-the-art of CO2 EOR
  • Gather industry feedback on (1) next generation technologies proposed in the ARI technical reports and (2) other technologies/promising solutions to overcome the technical barriers inhibiting CO2 flooding.

Join us in Houston February 22.

PTTC Highlight: Hydraulic Fracturing Module, A Focus on Tight Gas

A concise one-day workshop addressing design and operational considerations, including post-treatment evaluation and lessons learned. Case studies from all over the US. Come to Houston on Feb. 21 to learn:

  • What's required to build the mechanical earth model that forms the critical foundation for any treatment design.
  • How to make modeling work for you.
  • How to get the treatment you labored to design "in the ground."
  • Learn how to modify the treatment "on the fly" for better results.
  • In the real world, two thirds of production comes from one third of the wells. Learn how to find the sweet spot and make your well part of the one third that makes the production.
Bring your problems. Bring your questions. This is an opportunity to gain multiple perspectives on Hydraulic Fracturing and challenge fracturing philosophies. Is there anything beyond water fracs for tight gas?

Trivia Question: When was the first oil exported from the United States, and where did it go?

Trivia Answer: In November 1861, 1,300 barrels of Pennsylvania petroleum were loaded aboard a ship that reached London 45 days later. (from American Oil and Gas Historical Society, www.aoghs.org)
