Technology—The Engine That Drives O&G Production

MARCH 6 2008

Industry Highlight: OTC's 2008 "Spotlight on New Technology" Award Winners
To be eligible to compete, technologies must be less than two years old, proven through full-scale application or prototype testing, and must have broad interest and appeal for industry. The technology must also provide significant benefits beyond existing technologies. Although receiving awards at OTC, many technologies are equally applicable onshore. Review descriptions of the 14 technologies receiving awards this year.

DOE Highlights: Solicitation for "Environmental and Unconventional Oil - Technology Solutions for Oil and Gas Resource Development"
The solicitation's key objective is to initiate R&D to address a broad spectrum of environmental, and exploration and production issues associated with unconventional oil and gas resource development, including those associated with the Bakken Shale of North Dakota and Montana, the Arctic North Slope and other frontier resource areas. Estimated total funding for two topic areas (below) is $13.5 million. Cost share is required (20% for research, 50% for field demonstration). Proposals are due May 2, 2008.

Topic Area 1: Environmental R&D (4 - 7 awards anticipated)
Produced Water and Other Natural Gas and Oil Environmental Issues
Water Management Solutions to Enable Oil Shale Resource Development
    Alaska Environmental Solutions

Topic Area 2: Unconventional Oil R&D (3 - 6 awards anticipated)
Unconventional Resources (emphasis on Bakken of North Dakota and Montana)
    Alaska North Slope Heavy Oil

PTTC Highlight: Rockies "Futures in Energy 2008" —Student Training/Internship Program

PTTC's Rocky Mountain Region continues its student training/internship program, holding 2008 sessions in:

  • June 9-13 in Pinedale, WY.

  • June 16-20 in Golden, CO. at the Colorado School of Mines

Futures in Energy provides talented high school juniors and seniors with scholarships to an oil and gas technology training program. The five-day interactive training experience (classroom, plus field trip) focuses on O&G exploration. Free room and board is available for students. Qualifying students can compete for four-week or longer PAID internships with sponsoring companies in their home town. This program is completely dependent on generous donations to make it a success. Although targeting students in the Rocky Mountain area, the program is available to students from other areas. Want to provide support for this program? Contact Mary Carr (mcarr@mines.edu) at Colorado School of Mines about becoming a sponsor. Know a sharp high school student? Encourage them to apply and provide them an internship. Applications are being accepted through April 11

Trivia QuestionWhat's the best way to learn about what is going on in the world of energy education?

Trivia Answer:  We know — this is a strange trivia question. We posed it specifically to point you towards the "Energy Education Conference and Field Trip" organized by Bruce Wells with the American Oil and Gas Historical Society. This year's conference will be held in Houston from June 4 to 7. Never to soon to plan. Contact Bruce (bawells@aoghs.org) for details.
