Industry Highlight:
Intervention in Mature Environments
Recognizing that independents which PTTC primarily serves are quite often the
operators in mature environments, PTTC was drawn to this article in the February
issue of Hart's E&P. Technologies mentioned there were downhole video and
downhole wireless. Primary applications for downhole video are fluid entry
surveys, fishing/mechanical damage and pipe inspection. Mention downhole video
and Downhole
Video, Inc. (now part of Expro Group) comes to mind. Mention of
downhole wireless technologies caused PTTC to recheck the products/capabilities
that
Tubel Technologies Inc. is developing.
Finally, as long as readers are online in the February issue of E&P, they are
encouraged to read two articles covering microhole technology ("Microhole
Drilling Shaves Well Costs" by Don Duttlinger w PTTC; "Microholes
for Microdarcy Reservoirs" by Kent Perry and Samih Batarseh with Gas Technology
Institute) since developing microhole capabilities certainly target mature
fields.

Microhole Integration Meeting, Spring 2006 Update—March
22, 2006 in Houston
Coiled tubing drilling and re-entry completions are gaining momentum in the
Lower 48, including development of the technology to do it in smaller microholes.
Supporting DOE's microhole technology development effort, the 3rd in a series of
integration meetings that began last summer will occur on March 22 in Houston.
Excerpts from the agenda (below) illustrate why you should be there.
- Project Update: Field Demo of Existing Microhole Coiled Tubing Drilling
Rig (Gas Technology Institute)
- Updates on 5 Other Microhole Projects
- Ultra-High Speed Rotary Drilling (TerraTek)
- Vertical Seismic Profiling with Microholes at RMOTC (LBNL)
- U.S. Markets for Coiled Tubing Drilling (Xtreme Coil Drilling)
- Coiled Tubing Drilling Market Study (Schlumberger)
For Our Trivia Fans:
In a change of pace, this Tech Alert does not have a trivia question. Instead we
want to alert you to
the International Oil History Symposium on
April 20-23 in Wichita, Kansas. Co-hosted by the Petroleum History Institute
(Oil City, PA) and the American Oil & Gas Historical Society (Washington, D.C.),
the Symposium includes historical presentations, panel discussions, and field
trips. Saturday's events conclude with a tour of the Kansas Oil Museum's outdoor
exhibits, the running of rotary and cable tool rigs, and a visit to a re-created
oil boomtown.
