Trivia Question:  After some 20 years of chasing gold, Mike Murphy prospected for "black gold" and had much better success, drilling the well recognized as the first commercial oil well in Wyoming in 1883. What formation did this first oil production come from?

Trivia Answer: Drilling on the site of the "great tar spring" southeast of Lander, Mike Murphy and his brother found oil at 300 ft in what would become known as the Chugwater formation. This entire article provides a fascinating picture of an industry overcoming obstacles and remoteness to establish a viable industry. Current CO2 flooding at Salt Creek demonstrates that persistence is still alive and well in Wyoming.
