Industry Highlight: Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) Survey Prevents Drilling Unwarranted Sidetrack.

Baker Atlas Downhole Seismic Services (DSS) recently completed a multi-offset Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) survey for a small independent in East Texas. The customer drilled a well planning to cut a fault based on old 2D seismic data, but it wasn't there. Baker Atlas quickly designed a multi-offset VSP that could determine where the fault was located, if present. Data were gathered under difficult weather (major flooding) conditions and quickly processed (within 48 hrs) and interpreted while the rig was waiting. The data showed no indication of faulting, which allowed the operator to avoid what would have been an unwarranted sidetrack. (Excerpted from Baker Hughes email alert dated 8/30/2007).

DOE Highlight: Carbon Capture, Enhanced CBM Pilot Launched in ND Lignite.

The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership, one of seven DOE-supported Carbon Sequestration partnerships, has begun drilling operations to determine the suitability of a North Dakota lignite coal seam to sequester carbon dioxide and produce coalbed methane. Plans are to inject at least 400 tons of CO2 into the 1,200-ft deep unminable lignite seam in Burke County, ND. Five wells are planned in the two-year, two-phase pilot. The first phase will focus on data collection related to the coal seam and an evaluation of the seam's potential to produce coalbed methane. CO2 injection comprises Phase 2. Eagle Operating Inc., North Dakota, is collaborating with PCOR Partnership in the project.

Funding Opportunity: Proposals for DOE-Supported Gas Storage Technology Consortium due Oct. 25th. Proposals are being solicited from Members Only in four areas: mechanical, wellbore and reservoir, operations and salt cavern. 40% cost share is required. Period of performance for awarded projects will be Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2008.

Trivia QuestionIn what century (hint—before U.S. was formed) was asphalt first used? What was the source?

Trivia Answer:

The domestic U.S. asphalt business began in the late 16th century with imports from a naturally occurring bitumen lake found on the island of Trinidad. Sir Walter Raleigh used the material to re-caulk ships. (Courtesy of American Oil & Gas Historical Society, www.aoghs.org.)

Note—think that asphalt is an old technology? Think again—check out some of the innovations that SemGroup's SemMaterials has been making to improve this "old" material.
