Distinctive Features: Clients access financial, operational and geographical data using private accounts via the Internet. Earth-related software is used by an array of industries, including energy companies and government agencies. Applied Terravision provides Web-hosting services, a pay-as-you-go utility arrangement in which customers use a Web browser to access ATS applications via the Internet. This approach enables clients to reduce their total cost of ownership and gain access to ATS applications regardless of time or location. ATS can then help optimize customers' business processes by allowing transactions with customers, suppliers and partners.

Through a secure Intranet T1 line, A2D gathers, "cleans up," indexes, and makes available Texaco's proprietary data to all Texaco users around the world.

The site's funding strategy targets energy firms as initial investors. Membership and participation in the marketplace is free; a small commission is paid on successfully executed transactions. The marketplace will be open to all equipment, service and oil and gas companies that buy and sell new, used and surplus equipment or supply and contract for services.

The majority of equity ownership in Petrocosm is expected to be held by energy industry participants of all sizes. The equity stake for each participant is expected to be based on the amount of business committed through the marketplace, with special consideration for those who commit sooner. Ariba will receive revenues based on a percentage of transaction-based network revenue streams. This equity structure encourages industry ownership and broad participation from both buyers and suppliers. The savings potential for buyers is estimated to be from 5 percent to 30 percent of spending. Petrocosm is expected to include catalogs with millions of products and services, auctions, reverse auctions, bid/ask exchanges, strategic sourcing, spot buying, customer-specific pricing, electronic payments, logistics, integration to ERP systems and online community forums. Chevron intends to help initiate the site's transactional liquidity by targeting a substantial portion of its annual $10 billion in spending through Petrocosm. It will also be designed to help regionally based small and medium sized enterprises compete globally in a way that was not possible before. Commerce One will be paid license fees for their Internet technology. Initially, Shell will have the majority stake in the new joint venture; Commerce One and the joint venture staff will also have an equity stake. Shell expects the new system to cut its procurement cost significantly.

Sellers respond to these requests either through WellBid or by phone, fax or mail. The Profile Links feature, a form of targeted online advertising, allows sellers to provide geographically and categorically specific information about the quality of their products and services to buyers at the purchase decision point, providing a way for sellers to promote their goods and services on more than price alone.
